The World Health Organization (WHO) issued guidance on Ethics & Governance of Artificial Intelligence for Health which is the outcome of discussions between experts in different fields including ethics, digital technology, law, human rights, as well as experts from Ministries of Health. The report argues that ethics and human rights should be at the heart of the design, deployment, and use of AI and outlines the ethical challenges and risks with the use of AI in health. It further identifies six key principles for the use of AI for health: protecting human autonomy; promoting human well-being and safety and the public interest; ensuring transparency; explainability and intelligibility; fostering responsibility and accountability; ensuring inclusiveness and equity; and promoting AI that is responsive and sustainable. Finally, it provides a set of recommendations to ensure the governance of AI for health optimises the promise of the technology and holds all stakeholders accountable.
