The American Civil Liberties Unionhas identified 63 cases in which authorities in the US applied for an order asking Apple or Google to provide assistance in accessing data stored on mobile devices. The requests in all these cases were based on the All Writs Act, the same act invoked in the recently-concluded Apple/FBI case related to the San Bernardino attacks. The cases predominantly arise out of investigations into drug crimes, and involve different agencies such as the FBI, the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
