UK Cabinet Office minister Julia Lopez MP has stated that Government Digital Service (GDS) is running a pilot of a new digital identity system as a successor to the current digital ID system Verify. This comes as the government plans to withdraw its support from Verify. Verify, which was adopted in 2016 is an identity verification system offered by the UK government. Its uptake has been low, owing to issues such as lack of funding for agent companies who were to ensure its uptake, low capacity to process high demand for verification, and lack of uptake by government agencies.
Verify's successor will address these problems. It is also being tested for personalisation of services as well as 'one log in for all government services'. Its development is influenced by the country's recently published trust framework for digital identities.
