What's DevNet Doing at {Codemotion}?

Dec, 10, 2018 Hi-network.com

Codemotion|is|one of the largest technical conferences in Europe, with an international network of 570,000 developers and 3000 speakers from all over the world. This year they held conferences in Berlin, Rome, Madrid, and Milan, and Cisco DevNet was a platinum sponsor. You can find details and links on our {Codemotion} webpage.

The DevNet booth at Codemotion was packed with developers eager
to learn
more about Cisco APIs, SDKs, and the DevNet Community

Why was Cisco DevNet at Codemotion? Two Reasons:

Reason 1: The developer community is one of the most influential groups in any organization.

"This new way of working together has a surprising effect. It means each dev has tremendous influence on which tools get adopted.....If developers don't like a product, they won't use it. Period. No amount of pressure from a CIO can change that. Developers will always find a work-around that works better" -The Rise of the Developer

Developers are delivering the applications that drive and differentiate business. They are also passionate about how they build these apps and what tools they use. The requirements of a dev teams and their applications will determine what capabilities and services the underlying hardware and software stacks need to deliver, whether it be on cloud, on-premise, or at the edge.

Reason 2: Cisco is totally relevant to the developer community
In recent years we have seen the emergence of two distinct roles. The Application Developer and the Infrastructure Developer. The App Developer builds the company apps. They write their code and often integrate it with third parties using SDKs and APIs. Twilio and SendGrid are examples of third party API companies that app developers can leverage. Additionally they may embed cloud and infrastructure services into their applications such as analytics, chatbots and video . Whereas the Infrastructure Developer (a.k.a. an SRE, Full Stack Engineer, Platform Team) delivers the infrastructure upon which the applications are deployed. This includes Data Centers, Cloud, Kubernetes, WANs, and IoT.

Like the App Developer, the Infrastructure Developer also uses SDKs and APIs to couple the different layers of the hardware and software in their stacks. Cisco is delivering the platforms to make App and Infra developers successful.

At Codemotion Milan we had a DevNet stand with Meraki and Webex demos, demonstrating the value and capabilities these solutions offered the developer.

We also had speaking slots throughout the event covering topics and technologies such as:

  • FONK: A Serverless Stack for Kubernetes
  • Where Applications meet Infrastructure
  • Making Enterprise Virtual Reality and Practical Reality
  • My Developer Journey to Hybrid Cloud
  • API Magic and Applications on the Network

That's me talking about Virtual Reality at Codemotion

Finally, we ran a series of developer focused hands on labs covering solutions like Cisco Container Platform, Meraki, and Webex.

What was the result? We were rushed off our feet both days. There was a real buzz around the DevNet stand. Not only did we demo, but many a "lightbulb" moment was had, by both delegates and Cisco teams, while whiteboarding possible solutions and integrations. We even had delegates queuing to get into the DevNet labs.

The interest shown by this community demonstrate just how relevant Cisco is, and how Cisco solutions, and DevNet are empowering developers, the applications they build, and the networks on which the applications run.
