The police of Edmonton in Canada has announced considering the use of facial recognition technologies, following other Canadian cities (Calgary and Toronto). According to CBC, the police of Edmonton intends to use this technology to solve existing criminal investigations, by matching suspects with its database of mugshots obtained for a lawful purpose. In response, Alberta's privacy commissioner strongly encouraged the local police to submit a privacy review to ensure any future facial recognition program complies with privacy law.
