MIT's group of leaders and scholars, representing various disciplines, has presented a set of policy briefs with the goal of assisting policymakers in effectively managing AI in society. These documents suggest using current regulatory structures while expanding them to address the specific challenges posed by AI.

The main policy paper advocates for the integration of AI supervision within existing regulatory bodies and liability systems, stressing the importance of defining the purpose and intentions behind AI. It emphasises the need for clear rules to assign responsibility among AI providers, users, and those developing core AI tools. Additionally, it proposes the potential establishment of a new government-sanctioned oversight organisation similar to The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), tailored to navigate the dynamic landscape of AI effectively.

The initiative comprises numerous additional policy documents, coinciding with increased attention towards AI in the past year and substantial new investments from various industries. The papers tackle intricate legal aspects such as intellectual property rights, surveillance issues, and the potential misuse of AI-generated content. They support the idea of labelling AI-created material and explore the notion of AI complementing human labour instead of replacing it. Furthermore, the policy brief highlights the aspect in requiring AI providers to predefine the purpose and objectives of their AI applications. This proactive approach would allow for a clear understanding of which existing regulations and regulatory bodies are applicable to each specific AI tool, based on its intended use and function.

Why does this matter?

Governing AI encounters the complex task of overseeing both broad and specialised AI tools, addressing multifaceted issues such as misinformation, deepfakes, surveillance, and other potential challenges. Acknowledging AI's various uses, the brief highlights the essential requirement for customised oversight for different levels and functions of AI within intricate technological setups.

The committee underscored the vital role of academic institutions in shaping AI governance, advocating for comprehensive policymaking that intertwines technological advancements with societal impacts. They strive to bridge the gap between enthusiasm for AI progress and concerns regarding its ethical implications, emphasising that responsible regulation is crucial for the appropriate evolution of AI.
