Study reveals false posts overwhelming local Facebook groups, undermining genuine alerts

24 августа 2023 года Hi-network.com

A study conducted by the fact-checking charity Full Fact revealed that members of local Facebook groups have been exposed to many hoax posts. These false posts included fabricated reports of missing children, dangerous animals on the loose, and other alarming scenarios. The organization identified over 1,200 false posts across Facebook's community groups globally, and they believe this is likely just a tiny portion of the total.

These misleading posts, designed to create fear within communities, can inundate users with misinformation, possibly causing genuine alerts and appeals to be overlooked, Full Fact argues. The motivation behind spreading this content is unclear, but Full Fact suggests it might be driven by financial gains or the promotion of products/services. Although this misinformation was prevalent in the UK, similar posts were identified in the US and Australia.

Full Fact communicated their concerns about these hoaxes to Meta, the company that owns Facebook, in April, but it did not receive an answer. The editor of Full Fact, Steve Nowottny, stressed the significant impact of these hoax posts, which he believes are just the 'tip of the iceberg.' He noted that the sheer volume of such content is staggering and that genuine warnings and appeals for help are at risk of being disregarded due to the overwhelming presence of false information.

A Meta spokesperson responded by mentioning their efforts to combat misinformation, including partnerships with fact-checking organizations and investments in technology to identify and address scams and fraudulent content.

Why does it matter?

The widespread circulation of over 1,200 false posts across these groups, as identified by Full Fact, raises concerns about the vulnerability of online communities and highlights the inadequacy of existing safeguards against the spread of falsehoods. The study demonstrates how easily misinformation can infiltrate communities and exploit their trust to pursue various motives, whether financial gain or manipulation of public sentiment. This suggests a potential gap in accountability and highlights the challenges of enforcing content policies on such a massive and decentralized platform.
