By the end of June, the US Supreme Court will rule whether Alphabet Inc's YouTube can be sued over its video recommendations to users. The case looks into whether a US law that protects technology companies from legal responsibility for content posted online by their users also applies when companies use algorithms to target users with recommendations.
The ruling could have implications regarding toughening regulations shielding tech platforms and new rapidly developing technologies like ChatGPT. Hany Farid, a technologist and professor at the University of California, explained, 'when companies are held responsible in civil litigation for harms from the products they produce, they produce safer products.'
