The Committee to Protect Journalists said it will honour Jimmy Lai, founder of Hong Kong's Next Digital media company and Apple Daily newspaper, with the 2021 Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award.
The award is presented annually by CPJ's board of directors to recognise extraordinary and sustained commitment to press freedom.
Kathleen Carroll, chair of CPJ's board said that Jimmy Lai is a press freedom warrior. And they look forward to the day when they can present that award to Lai in person on November 18, 2021. Lai is currently in prison, and faces charges that could keep him in jail for the rest of his life.
