The European Credit Sector Associations (ECSAs) are urging the European Union to reconsider certain clauses in the legislation on the proposed European Digital Identity Wallet, mainly to keep payments out of its scope. The EU's Industry, Research and Energy Committee approved the proposal in February.
The ECSAs are concerned that payment systems included in the wallet's infrastructure would require substantial investment, potentially resulting in disproportionate costs for merchants and service industries accepting card payments. Removing payments would also address the issue of liability that banks would face.
They recommend limiting the mandatory wallet acceptance to verifying only the user's identity rather than for payments.
