Following a bilateral meeting on 23 August, the interior ministers of France and Germany called for the European Commission to change the EU legislation in order to allow intelligence and law enforcement agencies to access encrypted data. According to Techcrunch, the required change would give courts the ability to demand Internet companies to decrypt data in order to assist authorities in their investigations. The two ministers would want to see their proposal discussed at a European Commission meeting next month. Reactions to this proposal have already appeared, with the Computer&Communications Industry Association being worried that this may lead to governments challenging end-to-end encryption, and thus, threatening the security and confidentiality of communications for EU citizens.
