Indian officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) met with Google, Twitter and Facebook and criticised them for not proactively removing what they described as fake news on their platforms. The Indian government is particularly worried by the platform's inaction because they force the Indian Government to order content takedowns, drawing attention from the international community regarding freedom of speech concerns. In fact, digital rights advocates claim that such orders are not made public and set a worrying precedent. In its transparency reports, Twitter has said the Indian government makes among the highest number of requests to remove content from its platform. Meta, Twitter and Alphabet Inc declined comment regarding the meeting.
