Netsafe's latest study of New Zealand parents', caregivers' and perceptions of children's experiences of online risk and harm online reveal that a quarter of New Zealand children were upset by an online experience in the last year. For this study over 2000 children aged 9-17 and their parents were surveyed. The survey results revealed that 36 per cent children were exposed to violent or gory images and a fifth to self-harm methods. 25 percent of children mentioned that they were upset by an online experience in the past one year, while only 19 per cent parents knew about it. This finding points to a gap in the knowledge of parents on their children's engagement and experiences online.
