Trying to address the privacy problem generated by applications that process and access location data without the proper consent and control of users, researchers at UCLAare proposing a privacy module that would bring granular location privacy to mobile and Internet of Things devices. The module, named LocationSafe, is built directly into the GPS daemon, a low-level interface that runs on GPS enabled devices; it ensures that users have granular control over the release of their GPS location. In practice, users could control the level of details of the location given to applications (for example by picking a point within a specified radius so as not to reveal the device's exact position); they could also limit how frequently an application receives location data.
