South African Communications Minister Mondli Gungubele stated recently at the eighth Africa Tech Week that the government is committed to bridging the digital divide in the country. The state aims to ensure widespread internet access by expanding Wi-Fi hotspots, reducing data costs, emphasizing digital skills training, and leveraging new technologies.

As the world celebrates World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) under the theme "Digital innovation for sustainable development," Gungubele stresses the importance of digital inclusion and government digitization. He noted that internet access is vital for economic and human development, affecting work, education, health, business, and government processes.

The Digital Council Africa also stressed the need for innovative digital solutions to build a sustainable future and address the significant digital gaps that hinder global progress.

Why does it matter?

Celebrated annually on 17 May 1969 to mark the founding of the International Telecommunication Union and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865, WTISD raises awareness of the benefits of the internet and ICT and ways to bridge the digital divide. This year's theme highlights digital innovation's role in achieving sustainable prosperity and addressing global challenges.
