In order to boost the ICT sector, South Africa has announced its intention to produce locally digital devices including smartphones, as well as parts for telecommunications infrastructure, satellites and drones. The initiative comes as an attempt to reduce imports and increase local exports in order to recover the country's economy amid the Covid-19 crisis. Moreover, local investments in the ICT sector are regarded as an opportunity to create jobs for future generations and promote business activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
