During the last couple of days a text message campaign spreading coronavirus disinformation hit the United States. The messages contained misleading medical advice or false narratives. The biggest issue with this kind of campaign is that given the copy-paste procedure that a text message requires to be forwarded, it is really difficult to trace its origin. Consequently, there is no evidence to determine whether the messages are hoaxes designed by pranksters or targeted attacks. Experts such as Mr. Ed Bice, explained that even when technology companies working in the topic are mostly focusing on advanced technologies such as deepfakes and neural network generated images, any simple SMS campaign can be just as problematic to sow confusion.
