The plan of the UK government to implement age checks in pornography websites has been criticised by Privacy organisation such as Big Brother Watch, who have warned that it could result in a "privacy minefield" where a digital ID system may be introduced for accessing the internet. While these provisions being proposed in the Online Safety bill is being proposed for pornography websites, however there are many sites such as Twitter and Reditt which host adult content. Such a provision privacy groups have warned could result in establishing the principle of age-gating across the internet.
The Open Rights Group warned that while children should be protected from harmful content, however, such changes would expose internet users to surveillance and discrimination.
